The Setup – Kerry Wedding DJ:

I arrive and setup at the start of the evening once the dinner is over. If there is no band and I am playing the full evening I usually setup where the top table is, just at the foot of the dance floor. If there is a band playing first I will setup alongside them just beside the door to the balcony area. With the equipment setup I have it allows me to adapt to different spaces without losing quality. I provide everything that is needed for the night including all the sound and light equipment. I don’t require anything additional to be provided (only the power from the hotel, of course!). No hidden equipment hire charges or anything like that. Below is an example setup for an after band wedding set in Ballyseede Castle. You can see a nice appealing setup with sound, light and DJ booth all sitting nice beside the balcony door.

The Timeline:

Generally in Ballyseede Castle I aim to arrive at 8.30pm to be ready to set up once the meal is over. After the hotel staff have the space cleared I load in the equipment and setup. With or without a band I am ready to start before the first dance, usually around 9.30pm. My aim is to start a full evening reception around 9.30/9.45pm and with a short break for food and playing right through to 2am. If a band are playing first I would hope to start around midnight and play to 2am without any break in music. As I am setup before the band start there is no down time, no loss in music or atmosphere once the band finish. It is a smooth transition from band to DJ.

Wedding DJ Music:

For this wedding, the majority of the crowd were aged 25-40. The wedding couple had not asked for anything in particular so from watching the guests while the band played and judging what I saw I was able to put a setlist together. The 90’s dance music is a huge floor filler at weddings and it really went down a storm at this one. To balance it and add something different I included a few rock classics towards the end and the guys (groom included) had the ties around their head. Really great photo! I think the end of the night was the highlight and even the bride mentioned it in the testimonial after. The sing song was absolutely epic and it had everyone on the floor. Even the hotel turning on the lights couldn’t stop them. The groom was a big Liverpool fan and had asked for “Never Walk Alone”. I followed it up with one or two more and it had everyone in good spirits for the residence bar.

A wedding night is essentially a big party for all your family and friends to celebrate your marriage. The music is the soundtrack for the night. It is essential to play music to suit all tastes and ensure everyone is included. I always chat to a couple and encourage them to include some song suggestions but not dictate too much of the music. Including a few suggestions can really add a personal touch the night and make it special. It is important however, that young and old get a chance to boogie on the floor. All good entertainment will cater for and include everyone on the night.

I try to play a wide set covering a lot of decades and genres. This gives everyone a chance to dance with varying tempos. If the average age at the wedding is a little older then I adjust to play some of the older classics. Vice versa, if it is a predominantly a young crowd I will play a more chart focused/ Top 40 set.

It is very important to say I don’t work from a setlist and I am not a playlist focused DJ. As I mentioned above, my main aim is to keep a good flow on the dance floor with everyone enjoying it. If something is not working and is having a negative effect on the dance floor, it is quickly changed. If something is working and guests are filling the floor I generally have enough experience to be able to continue and play music that will complement the current mood.

A good DJ will be able to read a crowd and pick a perfect set to keep the party atmosphere going. The competition is over a number of stages. The first being a nationwide vote starting in late October. Once that is done and if you progress to the next stage, each finalist is asked to make an online submission. The entry is reviewed by a panel of wedding experts. It is these experts that determine the winner o f each category.

The awards night itself is a glitzy black tie gala night with over 33 categories, all presented by Lisa Cannon from TV3. I am absolutely thrilled and want to thank everyone for their support and bookings over the last number of years!

For this night Free Beer Wedding Band from Limerick played the first half of the nights entertainment and I partied into the small hours with the guests. The bride from West Cork and groom from Limerick danced into the night their 150 guests. The band played a great mix of party Irish, rock n roll and country music. I started with a few well known party classics into the 90s dance classics and some 90s hip hop. The Ac/Dc rock and Irish dancing went down a storm towards the end. I finished with a great song from Take That called Never Forget. It has a great chorus and everyone sang along. It was an ideal way to finish and put everyone in good form for the residents bar.

When emailing an enquiry be sure to include – date, venue and what you would like in terms of times etc. I get a huge number of enquiries without some of this information and it can be difficult to know what information people want. I am also always available via mobile and can answer any questions people have. I have been a Kerry Wedding DJ in Killarney at many weddings but this function was a local neighbor who got married. There were a lot of familiar faces at the wedding including some of my own family (no added pressure). J90 Wedding Band from Cork played the first half of the nights entertainment and had the floor full from the very start. The wedding had a wide range of ages to cater for with many different tastes in music. After speaking with the couple about the music they had no specific requests only to keep everyone dancing. I played a good mix of songs from a local nightclub that would have been well known to the couple as well as many of the guests attending. Looking at the couples testimonial after they said it was like them being back in their teenage disco days!

I have been a Wedding DJ for several years and have played countless weddings in Killarney including many in the Killarney Oaks. The two clips below (apologies for mobile phone quality) just show some of the fun from the night. This was coming towards the end of the night and I was playing some of the party hits that every guest will know. These songs near the end will ensure all the guests are on the floor and having a good time. Some even decided to make a train around the dance floor to get some people who were sitting down to join them on the dance floor. The Irish dancing/Riverdance songs are a popular request with couples. It makes sure the guests can let loose, or dance on a chair depending on their preference. 😉

Top Tip For Hiring Wedding DJs in Limerick:
Find out where the DJ is based. It is often better if a band or DJ don’t have to travel far to reach the venue. I am based in Limerick city and many venues are only a short 15/20 minute drive from home. This is great peace of mind that they won’t get delayed or lost on route. It also means they will have probably worked in the venue previously, know the function manager and it will make for a far smoother evening.
